As a composer, envisioning a concert in 2033 is truly exciting, considering the rapid advancements in technology in the last decade. I believe that virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) will likely revolutionize the way we experience concerts. I anticipate that technology will enhance collaboration and cultural exchange between artists, allowing them, for example, to perform together in real-time from different parts of the world. Audiences might have the opportunity to attend concerts virtually from anywhere in the world or experience interactive events online. Concerts in 2033 might also incorporate all of our senses: hearing, vision, touch, taste and smell, to create a fully immersive experience.

I look forward to all sorts of music that I’ve not yet heard, that surprises me and that I couldn’t have thought of. If I knew what I’d be listening to in 2033 it wouldn’t be that exciting. Or, to quote René Char: ‘However can we live without the unknown before us?’

First of all, I hope the world as we know it still exists in 2033, and no nuclear bomb has wiped out all of civilization.
I’d be curious to see if the concert as a concept will still be around, if people will be still “allowed” to go to a place in order to listen to music collectively, without any technology between the performers and their ears, and without the “necessity” of having visual elements attract all of their attention.

Something that I can’t even imagine today.

A large cuboid space which can flip from being highly reverberant to acoustically dead at a flick of a switch. All the sounds and/or audiovisual material performed in the space would be digitised in real-time and seamlessly streamed live online and be coded on-chain. The works can therefore be experienced globally as either VR, AR or other modern formats. AI algorithms would interpret the work if anyone has any questions.

In 2033 I am most looking forward to concerts of heterogenous, experimental voices wherein artists with many different approaches and backgrounds are presented along side each other with dedication, mutual support, and expressive rigor.

At an imaginary concert in 2033, I would be looking forward to hearing exciting music! The style does not matter to me – I am happy to hear music in as many different styles as can be found – but the content does. Above all, I cherish the twin virtues of imagination and invention. It is these I am looking forward to experiencing, both in 2033 and now.

Looking forward to most: Being surprised, delighted and engaged by the new repertoire presented by virtuoso young musicians.
